A Plan, Sort Of

Portland, Oregon – Last March, Jason and I spent a week hiking Section A of the Pacific Crest Trail. It was hard. As in, “why did we think this was a good idea?” hard. We were both out of shape and not exactly prepared for the physical challenge. On day one, we managed to hike a grand total of eight miles before collapsing into our tent.

On day three, a snowstorm dropped several inches of snow on us in Mt. Laguna.

Most nights I couldn’t fall asleep without my trusty fortress of pillows, and it didn’t take long to realize that sitting on the ground without chairs just wasn’t in the cards for us now that we've reached our more "well-seasoned" years.

The truth is we both had a blast and wanted to keep hiking!

This year, a new plan has been starting to take shape. Jason is thinking about asking for a leave of absence from work - three months to hike more sections of the trail starting this summer. Maybe we could squeeze in a few smaller chunks of trail during his spring days off? I secured the permits. We are getting serious.

The thing is, we both feel like doing something adventurous - something that feels pretty exciting for two 50-ish-year-olds teetering on the edge of physical decline.

Jason’s been pretty unhappy working in Saudi Arabia these past few years. He’s ready for a break. After six years of living in my little home on wheels, I could also use a bit of a break. So now we are wondering…

Can we do this?

Can we walk for three months?
