Today brought some of the best views and also the most technical trail we've seen so far. The descent down Rock Pass and the climb up to Woody Pass were both challenging and beautiful. It's the kind of hiking that demands your full attention while reminding you why you wanted to do this in the first place.
We stopped at the top of Woody Pass for a snack and a short rest. It was sunny and breezy, a good place to pause and enjoy the moment free from bugs. From there, the trail followed a long stretch of mountain sidehill walking with wide views, then climbed again to the ridges above Hopkins Lake.
The descent to Hopkins Lake was a long series of switchbacks, dropping about 900 feet. By the time we reached the bottom, we were both ready to stop. We set up the tent near the lake on a flat patch of grass and called it a day.
There are other hikers set up here, up in the tree area but no one close enough to see us in our grassy spot. Big wind gusts are dropping down in the valley across the lake towards us tonight, so we ate dinner quickly and played a game of cribbage before crashing.
Canadian border slack-pack tomorrow. I'm looking forward to walking without the weight for a day.
